Saving Regions to Files

A long recording is often really a series of shorter pieces — the tracks of an LP side, the takes of a voice-over session, the items of a radio show. Once you have marked those pieces with region markers, Save Regions to Files... writes each of them to a separate audio file in one operation.

This is the natural companion to Automatic Track Splitting, which creates the region markers for you, and to Labels and Regions, which describes how to add and name them by hand.

Saving the Regions

  • Make sure the recording contains the region markers you want to export, and that each region has the name you want the file to be called.

  • Choose Save Regions to Files... from the File menu, or press Alt/⌥ + F12.

  • The Save Regions as Files dialog appears. Set the options described below and click OK.

Acoustica creates the target folder if it does not exist and then writes one file per region. If a file of the same name is already present, you are asked before it is overwritten.

Settings

  • Target folder

    The folder the files are written to. You can type a path or click the folder button to the right to browse for one. The folder defaults to your Music folder and Acoustica remembers your last choice.

  • File name prefix

    Text placed in front of each region name to build the file name. The file name is the prefix followed by the name of the region, so the prefix Concert - followed by a space and a region named Encore produce Concert - Encore.wav.

    The prefix is filled in for you from the title in the file properties if there is one, and otherwise from the name of the source file.

  • File type

    The audio file format to write. Click the settings button to the right of the list to open the encoder options for the selected format — for example the bit rate for MP3, or the resolution for Wave files. See Supported File Formats.

  • Anchors

    Controls which anchors inside a region are carried over into the file written for it:

    • Save both labels and captions
    • Save only captions
    • Save only labels
    • Don't save anchors

Give the regions meaningful names before exporting. The region name becomes the file name, so naming them afterwards means renaming files on disk instead.
